For an ordinary, non-urgent paper letter from Australia to the USA, start with Australia Post’s International Economy Air service. It has no tracking. For an important document, compare International Post Registered, Express or Courier against the record and speed you need. If the recipient accepts a printed copy, producing and mailing that copy inside the US is another option.

An envelope with two sheets: size, cost and delivery#

For this example, fold two sheets of paper into a 220 × 110 mm envelope, with no other enclosures. Weigh and measure it after sealing; it must meet the small-letter limits below.

  • Size: Small letters can be up to 240 × 130 mm, 5 mm thick and 250 g. The example envelope fits those dimensions if its contents keep it within the thickness and weight limits.
  • Postage: A$4.40 for International Economy Air to the USA using your own envelope and international postage. Tracking is not included.
  • Delivery: The USA estimate is 15+ business days between metro destinations, not guaranteed. Regional and rural mail can take longer; customs time, if applicable, is excluded. Add five business days when sending from South Australia, Tasmania or the Northern Territory.

A larger or thicker envelope can cost more. For urgent documents, compare Express rather than relying on Economy Air to meet a deadline.

Choose the service before buying postage#

Australia Post’s overseas-letter guide (opens in new tab) distinguishes these services. Use your recipient’s requirements to narrow the choice:

Your task
Service to investigate
An ordinary note with no tracking requirement
International Economy Air.
Correspondence for which you want a signature and available tracking
International Post Registered; check the US destination’s service features.
Important or urgent documents
International Express or International Courier. Australia Post recommends these for important documents; Courier has restricted destinations and posting locations.
A PDF the recipient is happy to receive as a printed copy
A print-and-mail service. Establish whether it prints in Australia or inside the US.

If the recipient requires a particular postal service or receipt, use its exact wording when choosing. A service described as “registered” does not automatically meet every organization’s requirements.

Prepare and address the finished envelope#

Put together the actual pages and any enclosures before pricing the letter. Australia Post’s international letter category is for printed material without commercial value. An object tucked beside a note can change the category, and an oversized piece may need to travel as a parcel.

Measure and weigh the complete envelope, including the paper. If you lack a scale, take the prepared piece to a Post Office for assessment. Keep an original signed page in the physical envelope when the recipient needs the original; uploading a scan produces a copy.

Write the recipient’s current address clearly. The following is a layout example, not an address to mail to. Replace every sample detail:

ALEX MORGAN
123 EXAMPLE ST APT 4
BOSTON MA 02108
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Australia Post’s addressing guidance (opens in new tab) puts the destination country in capitals on the last line. Put your Australian return address at the upper left or on the back, following its guidance. The US envelope-addressing guide explains apartment, business and PO Box details.

Get postage and a delivery estimate for your letter#

Use Australia Post’s postage and delivery calculator (opens in new tab) with these inputs ready: your Australian origin, United States destination, letter contents, finished weight and dimensions, and the service you selected. Keep the US ZIP code available for any destination-specific check.

Choose the letter or document option that matches your item. Do not use a parcel quote simply because it is the first result. If the calculator does not offer your letter service, use the letter guide’s pricing information or have a Post Office quote the finished envelope.

For example, imagine you are in Sydney sending a folded personal letter to a friend in Boston. You already have the paper and envelope, and neither tracking nor an original signature is required. Price that finished piece as an eligible Economy Air letter. Your comparison is the postage you still need to buy, plus any supplies you have not bought—not the price of a courier satchel or a print-and-mail order.

Now change the example: the recipient needs your original signed document and a signature record. Keep the original in the envelope and compare the eligible registered or express options. The more suitable option follows from that requirement, not from choosing the cheapest result.

Record the complete quote and its delivery estimate together. Check whether quoted postage includes the envelope or optional services. A transit estimate starts from the carrier’s process; allow separately for preparing the letter and getting it accepted.

Complete the paperwork and postal handoff#

Australia Post requires customs documentation for International Express and Courier letters, even though they contain documents. Follow the instructions for the service you buy. Also check current international service notices (opens in new tab) for a disruption affecting your US route.

Economy Air letters with correct postage can go into a street posting box or be handed over at a Post Office. For a service supplying an acceptance record, lodge it through that service’s required process and keep the receipt. Courier uses selected Post Offices; buying postage alone does not complete the handoff.

When sending a PDF through US printing makes sense#

US printing is useful when the recipient accepts a copy and you want the paper produced near its destination. It cannot transport the original or a physical enclosure from Australia. A service printing in Australia removes your printing errand but still sends the resulting paper internationally.

Postmarkr prints an uploaded PDF for US letter mailing and requires a usable US return address you are authorized to use. Arrange permission and returned-mail handling before using someone else’s address. Your Australian correspondence address can stay inside the letter, but it does not replace the US return address.

Prepare a PDF for US Letter printing and review the document and address-page preview. If your file is A4 and Postmarkr offers fitting to US Letter, inspect the fitted pages before continuing. If fitting is not offered, export a US Letter version from your document editor and check the layout before uploading. Review the checkout total before paying. Certified Mail is not currently offered for new sends. The abroad-to-USA guide explains the broader route choice.

Before you send#

Match the final envelope or preview to the recipient’s instructions. Check the apartment or suite, ZIP code, return address, selected service and total. Save a copy of the letter and any acceptance record. For the Sydney-to-Boston example, the task is complete when the correctly addressed, paid-for letter has actually been handed into the chosen postal route.
