To send a letter from France to the USA, you can prepare your own envelope and buy international postage, or use an online service to print and mail an accepted copy. For La Poste, the key choice is between Mon Timbre en Ligne, e-lettre rouge and Lettre recommandée internationale: they complete different jobs.
Choose self-prepared mail when the original paper must reach the recipient. Choose online printing when a new paper copy is acceptable. If the recipient needs a particular mailing record, select a service that supplies it before buying postage.
An envelope with two sheets: size, cost and delivery#
For a letter sent from mainland France, fold two sheets into a DL envelope, 220 × 110 mm. Weigh it after sealing; the prices below assume a total of 20 g or less, with no other enclosures.
- Size: This envelope fits Lettre internationale. The service allows envelopes up to 3 cm thick; the example uses its lightest weight band, not the service’s maximum weight.
- Postage: €2.25 with an international stamp, or €2.19 for postage printed through Mon Timbre en Ligne. These are ordinary, untracked letter rates; paper and the envelope are separate.
- Delivery: La Poste’s service catalogue gives a 6–8-day indicative target for the USA and Canada. Allow flexibility: its current consumer guidance warns that non-EU letters can take several weeks. Neither is a guaranteed arrival date.
Heavier envelopes and tracking cost more. For a firm arrival deadline, ask about a suitable express document service.

Choose the La Poste purchase that fits your task#
La Poste’s current US options page (opens in new tab) lists separate routes for letters/documents and for goods. Use its letters-and-documents section for paper correspondence.
Your task | Choose | What you still do |
|---|---|---|
Post a letter you have already printed | International postage through Mon Timbre en Ligne, or suitable international stamps | Address, pack and hand over the physical envelope |
Have your uploaded letter printed and mailed | E-lettre rouge with the US destination | Provide the final content, recipient details and chosen options; review the order |
Send an international registered letter | Lettre recommandée internationale at a physical La Poste outlet | Bring the document and select any required acknowledgment-of-receipt option |
La Poste’s US letter guide (opens in new tab) distinguishes ordinary, tracked and registered international letters. It says international registered letters are available at physical sales points. An online button for a domestic registered product is not a substitute.
A worked example: a printed letter from Lyon#
Imagine Camille in Lyon sending a personal letter to a friend in the US. The recipient accepts an ordinary printed letter and has not asked for tracking or a signature. Camille has a printer, paper and an envelope.
- Print and fold the letter, place it in the envelope, and weigh the complete piece. A printout without its envelope is not the weight you are posting.
- Write the recipient’s full US address and your own usable French return address. Use the layout below for the destination.
- Open Mon Timbre en Ligne (opens in new tab), or take the envelope to a La Poste counter. For the quote, specify a letter containing documents only, the United States destination, the finished weight and whether tracking is wanted.
- Buy the applicable international postage, print and attach it according to the instructions if purchased online, then hand over the envelope. At a counter, ask where to deposit that prepared item before leaving.
Camille’s choice is ordinary international postage because the task does not require an additional record. If the friend later asks for tracking, Camille needs the tracked international option before posting; a printed copy of the purchase confirmation does not add tracking to ordinary mail.
Write the US address in the right order#
Replace each line of this example with the recipient’s details. Keep any apartment or suite information and copy the recipient’s ZIP code rather than guessing it:
RECIPIENT NAME
STREET NUMBER AND STREET NAME, APARTMENT OR SUITE
CITY STATE ZIP CODE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
La Poste’s US addressing instructions (opens in new tab) place the recipient, street, city/state, postal code and destination country in that sequence, with the country in capitals. The envelope-addressing guide covers details such as PO Boxes and attention lines.
No printer? Order the letter, not a stamp#
With e-lettre rouge (opens in new tab), you supply the content online and La Poste prints, envelopes and sends it. Its current US offer list includes this route for letters and documents. Review the US destination, chosen options and total in the order.
In Camille’s example, a broken printer changes the preparation task. If a copy remains acceptable, e-lettre rouge can replace Camille’s printing and envelope preparation. Mon Timbre en Ligne would only produce postage and leave the letter unprinted.
If the recipient instead needs Camille’s original handwritten signature, uploading a scan cannot meet that requirement. Camille should print or prepare the document locally, sign it, and send that sheet through a physical carrier.
Need a receipt? Take the requirement to the counter#
For Lettre recommandée internationale, bring the recipient’s exact request to a La Poste outlet. If a signed acknowledgment of receipt is required, ask for the applicable avis de réception option and retain the posting record and item number.
Use this short counter request: “Je souhaite envoyer ces documents aux États-Unis en lettre recommandée internationale, avec avis de réception.” It means you want to send these documents to the United States by international registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt. Omit the receipt request if you do not need it.
A recipient asking for a specifically named US postal service must agree to the proposed alternative. The French service name alone does not establish that it meets an agency’s or organization’s rules.
Compare the actual quote and international timing#
For your own envelope, the quote needs the destination, finished weight and selected mailing features. For online printing, compare the total for the actual file and options, including production. The starting price on a service landing page may describe a different destination or format.
E-lettre rouge’s prominent delivery headline has a stated domestic geographical scope; it is not a promise of the same timing to the USA. Use the international information for your chosen service and allow for preparation and handoff as well as transit. For a fixed arrival requirement, investigate an appropriate document courier rather than treating an estimate as a guarantee.
If you have heard that US-bound mail is suspended, start with La Poste’s current US service list (opens in new tab). Its notice about certain goods does not erase the separate letter-and-document options. Adding a small gift changes the contents category, even if it fits beside the paper.
When a copy printed inside the US is suitable#
Postmarkr prints an uploaded PDF for US letter mailing. This route requires a usable US return address you are authorized to use and a recipient who accepts the copy. It does not transport your original paper, and Certified Mail is unavailable for new sends.
Prepare a US Letter PDF, inspect the preview and any added address page, then review the total before paying. If your A4 upload offers an eligible fit-to-Letter option, inspect the fitted preview before accepting it. Otherwise, or if the fitted layout is unsuitable, export a US Letter version from the source document and check the new page breaks. Arrange returned-mail handling for the US return address; your French correspondence address can remain inside the letter. The abroad-to-USA guide explains the broader choice.
Finish with the record for the route you used: a retained document and postage details for ordinary mail, the supplied mailing records for registered mail, or the final file and order record for online printing. Keep the purchase and physical handoff distinct so you know whether there is still an envelope to post.
