*Rates as of January 2026 USPS rate cycle. Last verified March 2026.*
Search "direct mail pricing" and you'll find a lot of "contact us for a quote." That's frustrating when you're trying to budget. Mail has real, knowable costs: USPS postage rates are public, paper and printing costs are predictable, and platform fees are either published or discoverable. Here's the full breakdown — no "it depends," no gated pricing pages.
How much does USPS postage actually cost?#
Postage is the floor — the minimum you'll pay no matter how you send mail. Everything else (printing, platform fees, envelopes) sits on top.
Mail type | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
First-Class letter (stamped) | $0.78 / 1 oz | Retail rate at the Post Office |
First-Class letter (metered) | $0.74 / 1 oz | Metered or precanceled stamp |
First-Class postcard | $0.61 | Standard 4.25" x 6" or smaller |
Marketing Mail (bulk letter) | $0.372 | Automation 5-digit; requires 200+ pieces and USPS permit |
EDDM Retail | $0.247 / piece | No mailing list needed; 200-5,000 pieces per ZIP per day |
Certified Mail | $5.30 + postage | Fee only — add $0.74 postage for a 1 oz metered letter ($6.04 total) |
Certified + Return Receipt | $10.44 | 1 oz metered + $5.30 certified + $4.40 green card return receipt |
All rates from USPS Notice 123, effective January 2026. USPS updates rates in January and July each year.
The key distinction: postage only covers delivery. If you're mailing from your desk, add the cost of paper (~$0.02/sheet), envelopes (~$0.05-$0.10 each), toner or ink (~$0.03-$0.05/page), and your time (3-7 minutes per letter for printing, folding, stuffing, addressing, and stamping). That's where online platforms earn their fee — they handle everything after you upload a document.

How do direct mail platform prices compare?#
Here's what it costs to send mail through eight different platforms. We verified every published price as of March 2026. Where a price isn't published, we note that.

Self-serve | Yes (Post Office) | Yes | No (sales call) | No (sales call) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes (developer) |
A note on Lob: Lob is an API platform designed for developers building mail into their own software. Their pricing varies by volume and contract. Several platforms on this list use Lob under the hood for printing and delivery. If you're a developer, Lob's documentation explains their pricing model. If you want to send mail without writing code, the other platforms in this table are a better fit.
What "includes" means: Platform prices for Postmarkr, DOPE, Click2Mail, LetterStream, and DocuSend include printing, postage, and delivery. You upload a document or design, pay, and the platform handles everything else. USPS Direct means you're doing the printing, folding, stamping, and mailing yourself.
Postmarkr pricing: letters start at $1.50 (first page B&W) with additional pages at $0.20 (B&W) or $0.40 (color). Color letters start at $1.75 first page. Postcards: $1.00 (4x6), $1.25 (6x9), $1.50 (6x11). All prices include printing, USPS First-Class postage, and delivery tracking. A 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee (Stripe) applies per transaction. What hidden costs should you watch for?#
The per-piece price on a platform's pricing page is rarely the whole story. Here's what else to budget for.
Address verification and cleansing. Bad addresses waste postage. Some platforms include USPS address verification free (Postmarkr does). Others charge $0.01-$0.05 per address or require you to clean your list separately. USPS returns roughly 4.37 billion pieces of mail annually as undeliverable (FY 2023, USPS PostalPro) — address verification prevents your mail from joining that pile.
Design fees. DOPE Marketing includes design work with their $250/month platform fee. PostcardMania bundles design into campaign pricing. Self-serve platforms (Postmarkr, Click2Mail, DocuSend) expect you to bring your own PDF. If you need design help, budget $50-$200 per template from a freelancer.
Mailing list acquisition. If you don't have a recipient list, you'll need one. Targeted mailing lists cost $0.05-$0.25 per address depending on filters (industry, geography, demographics). EDDM sidesteps this entirely — you choose postal routes, not individual addresses.
Cancellation penalties. DOPE Marketing's terms require 14-day written notice and payments are non-refundable. PostcardMania campaigns may involve contracts. Pay-per-piece platforms like Postmarkr, Click2Mail, and LetterStream have no cancellation penalties because there's nothing to cancel.
Return mail costs. When mail is returned as undeliverable, you've already paid full postage and printing. At Postmarkr, if mail is returned as undeliverable, contact support to request a refund or resend. Some platforms offer no remedy for returns.
The time cost. If you're doing it yourself, 3-7 minutes per letter adds up fast. At 100 letters, that's 5-12 hours of work. At the median office clerk wage of $20.97/hour (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2024), the labor alone costs $105-$251 — before postage.
Why does cost per response matter more than cost per piece?#
The natural instinct is to minimize per-piece cost. Send the cheapest postcard, use the lowest-rate platform, cut every corner. But the number that actually matters is what you pay for each response.
Mail type | Cost per piece | Typical response rate | Cost per response |
|---|---|---|---|
EDDM postcard | ~$0.50 (printing + $0.247 postage) | 0.5-1% | $50-$100 |
Standard postcard (targeted list) | $0.70-$1.00 | 1-3% | $23-$100 |
First-class letter | $1.50-$1.75 | 2-4% | $38-$88 |
Handwritten-style letter | $2.50-$3.50 | 3-5% | $50-$117 |
Certified mail | $6.04+ | 5-10% (compliance/legal) | $60-$121 |
Response rate data from ANA Response Rate Report 2023 (published February 2024). Average direct mail response rate: 4.4% vs 0.12% for email.
The math is counterintuitive. A $0.50 EDDM postcard with a 0.5% response rate costs $100 per response. A $1.50 letter with a 3% response rate costs $50 per response. The more expensive piece generates cheaper leads.
This doesn't mean you should always send the most expensive mail. It means you should test different formats and track results. The cheapest per-piece option is only cheaper if it converts at the same rate — and it almost never does.
For businesses sending compliance or legal notices, the calculation is different entirely. A certified mail letter at $6.04 isn't a marketing expense — it's a compliance requirement. The cost of *not* sending it (missed deadlines, legal exposure) far exceeds the postage.

Frequently Asked Questions#
What's the cheapest way to send direct mail?#
For postcards, USPS Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) at $0.247/piece is the cheapest option — no mailing list needed, just postage. For letters, doing it yourself costs $0.74-$0.78 in postage plus paper and envelopes. Online platforms add convenience: Click2Mail starts around $0.90/letter, Postmarkr charges $1.50/letter with printing, postage, and tracking included. The cheapest option depends on whether you value your time or your budget more.
How much does it cost to mail 1,000 postcards?#
Your total postcard mailing cost depends on the platform. USPS postage alone: $610 (First-Class at $0.61/piece). Through a platform with printing included: $690-$990 with DOPE Marketing, $500-$700 with Click2Mail, or $1,000 with Postmarkr (4x6 First-Class). At high volumes, PostcardMania quotes as low as $0.20-$0.50/piece ($200-$500 for 1,000). Platform fees apply on top for some services — DOPE charges $250/month before any mail costs.
Is direct mail more expensive than email?#
Per piece, yes — direct mail costs $0.61-$3.00+ versus fractions of a cent for email. But response rates tell a different story. Direct mail averages a 4.4% response rate compared to 0.12% for email (ANA Response Rate Report 2023). A $1.50 letter that gets a 3% response costs $50 per response. The right channel depends on your margins and what you're selling.
What's the difference between first-class and marketing mail pricing?#
First-Class Mail costs $0.74/letter (metered) and delivers in 1-5 business days. USPS Marketing Mail starts at $0.372/piece but requires a minimum of 200 pieces, a USPS permit, and presorted automation formatting. Marketing Mail takes 3-10 business days. For small volumes, First-Class is simpler. For 200+ pieces, Marketing Mail saves roughly 50% on postage.
Do direct mail platforms charge monthly fees?#
Some do, some don't. DOPE Marketing charges $250/month before any mail costs. PostcardMania varies by campaign. Postmarkr, Click2Mail, LetterStream, and DocuSend charge no monthly fee — you pay per piece. If you send fewer than 500 pieces per month, a pay-per-piece platform almost always costs less.
